A Guide to The Friends Program: For the past 15 years colleagues and graduate students have asked us if we have a handbook about our program that they could share with their trainees. Parents have also inquired about a handbook that they can share with family members and their children’s teachers. So here it is, a reader friendly guidebook to The Friends Program. The program strives to replicate a preschool and elementary school setting to capture the challenges that these children experience at school, across social settings such as their home, and in after school activities.
The program is unique in that the parents, experienced interpreters of their children’s social world, attend every session. We learned early on that their observations and comments made during the parent’s group provided the clinicians with insight that might otherwise take months to acquire. A parent immediately knew which movie or video their child was referring to during the table discussion.
They understood why a child may look distressed at the start of a session or what they were eager to share in the group. The program runs on the academic calendar since we have learned that different issues arise at different times such as the opening of the school year, holidays, and tests. Our curriculum is not standardized but molds to fit the issues the children are currently raising, i. The book defines each area and elaborates on how these goals are addressed in different activity themes.
The journey involves stages of denial, anger and frustration, bargaining, sadness, advocacy, and acceptance.
Helping each other enjoy life and relationships on the spectrum. Saturday, May 26, The Hidden Autistics – Asperger’s in Adults Recently I encountered a problem while collaborating with a group therapist with whom I share a patient. My patient has progressed quickly in therapy, as do many adults on the spectrum. However he did not start off as stereotypically autistic.
In fact, initially he presented as many of my patients do:
Twitter Because I’m a 21 year old guy, will be 22 next year in January, never had a girlfriend, still a virgin, always been single. I have Asperger Syndrome, which is a mild form of Autism, so I’m not a very social person, I don’t have a lot of friends and I’m not very outgoing. I’m not good at starting conversations, like I have a very hard time starting a conversation and keeping it going, whether it is small talk or any talking, I’m not good at talking to girls, and I don’t think I will ever get better because of Asperger Syndrome.
So is it impossible for a guy with Asperger Syndrome to get a girlfriend and start dating? Is love not meant for everyone? Plus, guys with Asperger Syndrome have it a lot harder than girls with Asperger Syndrome because us guys unfortunately always have to make the first move, approach the girl and start talking to her first, initiating a conversation. I know it’s Tradition, but girls never chase or pursue guys, never ask guys out. That is why I probably will never have a girlfriend, I’ll probably die a virgin and be single for the rest of my life.
I’m 5’6 or 5’7, black hair, brown eyes, weigh lbs.

From our first few minutes, it was clear that neither she nor I were not interested in each other, or that we wanted to go on the date. But what were we going to do? NT women especially tend to want their partners to understand them and their feelings.
However, they need to realize that this is something they may not be able to get from their AS partner.
I thought it was so sweet and endearing then. Today it is considered a high-functioning form of autism. It presents in myriad ways, including obsession with details; social awkwardness; a seeming inability to recognize the feelings or reactions of others; and a flat, outward expression with few physical cues as to what the AS person is feeling. I had no clue about this when I fell in love with Mike. He balanced me nicely: I was outgoing and verbally engaging, Mike was quiet and had no problem being alone.

My special someone scored 36, and my closest friend scored 28 but we think he was making some of it up because he’s got more traits than either of us. My special someone’s son has been diagnosed Aspergers and when he first started talking about the way he is, I recognised and identified with lot of the traits and difficulties. I’m curious about the condition because I have always felt that I did not fit in and that I felt and perceived things differently and more intensely than most people around me; that I was much more sensitive in some ways and totally oblivious in others.
